TRUDY’S NOTE

Hi There!

How do you become known as an expert? You could speak more. But you aren’t a good speaker. You could write articles. But you don’t think you’re a great writer. Ahhh here’s something! You could become very knowledgeable about your subject.

The question is what do you do to get called by magazines, newspapers, and radio and TV shows. You could call them. (That’s called public relations.)

How do you become known as an expert? Take a look at what follows.

Read on …

My Happiest Wishes for you,

1. FEATURED ARTICLE. 6 Steps to Becoming Known as an Expert.

><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><>

1. SPEAK – AT CONFERENCES AND IN COURSES (YOURS OR OTHERS).

Are you a good speaker/ trainer who really knows your subject? You could speak live at any Chamber of Commerce in Canada or the U.S. (for f*r*e*e so you can get known and get practice) and at any networking group that has your ‘ideal’ clients attending (for f*r*e*e so you can get practice and have more public relations).

You could be a guest speaker on others’ teleclasses or you could produce your own. And once you’re really good, you can speak for corporations and at conferences (and get paid for it).

You could also run your own course where you train people (this entails a lot of work) or you could be the trainer for someone else who promotes you.
2. WRITE ARTICLES TO & FOR NEWSPAPERS OR ONLINE.

Become a writer of articles for newspapers and online.

There are several places you could send your articles …

1. write a letter to the editor (newspaper)

2. have a regular column (newspaper)

3. write and send online articles to several places (Be sure that one of these is www.ezinearticles.com )

All of these cost you nothing and can be done by you or you could pay someone to write for you.

Remember that #1 and #2 can and should be done in a local paper especially if you have a ‘neighbourhood’ that you sell in and #3 is international so articles are read by everyone.
3. KNOW YOUR SUBJECT – WELL.

You’ve started your business because you are very familiar with your subject. In fact, you love it so much that you keep taking courses, reading books. Listen to teleclasses and go to conferences to learn even more.
4. MAKE UNEXPECTED COMMENTS.

Do this because you want people to think – and you want to remembered for that reason. You may write to an editor each time you see a topic that that you know something about.
5. BE READER-CENTRED.

When you speak or write, the best thing to do is to use the word YOU. Talk directly to listeners or readers and use examples of how something affects them. For example, someone is looking at buying real estate as an investment. If you’re a realtor then say ‘Would you like to know how investing in real estate can bring you closer to your dreams?’
6. USE FEW WORDS TO SAY A LOT.

Less is more. When you speak or write remember that you should keep your words to a minimum. Think of ads that really affect you so you stop and read what they say. They do it with very few words, don’t they? As an expert it’s really important to keep things short and simple. Do you?
WHAT DO YOU DO NEXT?

Get out and take action. Look for places to speak or write (in your target market) and then ask if you can.

Be aware of all the issues that apply to you. Get to know reporters and writers and then call them whenever your subject is in the news. Pretty soon they’ll be phoning you for your opinion and you’ll be the expert.

Keep learning, … and until next time.

2. BORN TO READ BOOK REVIEWS

<><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><>

Here are the two books for this issue. The first one is business and the second is spiritual. As always I own them both and have read them.

MADE TO STICK. WHY SOME IDEAS SURVIVE AND OTHERS DIE by Chip Heath & Dan Heath.

There are six principles that the Heath brothers tell us about in their book. To remember these, use the word SUCCESs – a simple, unexpected, concrete, credentialed, emotional story. They give lots of examples and suggest how we can do it for ourselves. We should pay attention (unexpected), understand and remember it (concrete), agree/ believe (credible), care (emotional), and be able to act on it (story).

What do you think? Do you believe the example they use of a Nordstrom (department stores known for outstanding customer service) employee who cheerfully wrapped a gift bought at Macy’s (a competing chain of department stores)? Why couldn’t it happen? Nordstrom has a philosophy that one must make customers happy even at the expense of efficiency. The ‘stickiness’ and value of this story comes from the perfect alignment between Nordstrom’s goals and the content of the story. What happened is unexpected.

Believe it or not the Heaths have many examples like this. They even have parts at the end of each chapter asking you to analyse a ‘saying’ then giving you an alternative that works.

They have ideas which include the ‘symptom’ and the solution.

What do you think? I read the book and hung on every word.

Buy this book and read and use it.

HEART AT WORK. STORIES AND STRATEGIES FOR BUILDING SELF-ESTEEM AND REAWAKENING THE SOUL AT WORK by Jack Canfield and Jacqueline Miller

This an anthology of articles similar to ‘Chicken Soup for the Soul’ of which Jack is also a co-author.

The idea for this came at the end of a conference in 1995 on Self-Esteem in the Workplace sponsored by California that was one of the things in their Task Force to Promote Self-Esteem and Personal and Social Responsibility. We all agree that at the level of principles, values and what matters to the heart, we’re all the same. It’s particularly appropriate now in these challenging times.

The book is divided into six parts each of which is prefaced by a couple of quotes and a cartoon (the book has many). The articles range from a few paragraphs to several pages. They’ve been written by a broad set of individuals from political leaders to cab drivers and each has something unique to say that is provocative or profound.

Canfield and Miller gathered together stories that make a statement that’s bold and loud. It can (and should) be read by CEOs, entrepreneurs, managers, supervisors, employees, consultants and coaches. Read individual stories in any order you wish. Pick up the book and let it fall open then read what’s there.

Buy this book, use it and others about it.
