Cheryl RankinCheryl and I have both been networking for many years so of course that’s how we met. When it started the now defunct Women in a Home Office was held at The Beacher Cafe in Toronto (that’s where I hold my networking group now) and that’s where Cheryl and I first met more than 10 years ago.

We’ve continued to run into each other over the years at events here in Toronto. In fact she was a speaker at my network and I used her (her team) service when I needed a Word doc made into a pdf. The latter took a lot of back and forth (because of me) but they hung in until it was ready for publication!

Again networking and building relationships have paid off!

As Cheryl writes about her company Fit For Business on her website ” Hiring Fit For Business is like hiring a personal trainer for all aspects of a small business.” and she’s right. You need personal attention which means someone who listens carefully to you and recognizes what you need.

Brenda MacIntyreTeaching your target market helps you get to know your students so that when you network with them later you’ve already started building a relationship with each one. That’s how I met Brenda MacIntyre. In 2004 I was one of the instructors for a course on How to Start and Grow your Business at the Native Women’s Resource Center in Toronto and one of the business coaches for women in the course. That’s where and when I met Brenda. She wanted to become a business owner.

I’ve followed her career since we met and she has really blossomed – she’s become a financial success and is known by many people around the world.

Teaching and building relationships pays off!

As Brenda writes on her website ” After moving from BC to Toronto (17), an opportunity landed in my lap – and I became one of the first female hip hop artists, with a Top 40 single in Miami. Soon after, I fell in love with reggae, and was featured on a Juno (Canadian Grammys) Award-winning CD and nominated for a Canadian Reggae Music Award.

So she was successful in music long before she became successful as a spiritual coach. She does things differently from other business and spiritual coaches. She describes herself as your spirit led guide. Listen to her own words to describe this.

We had a wonderful conversation at a Second Cup Coffee Shop (that’s the noise you hear in the background).  We spent more time after the interview – I told her of some people and she told me about a “graphic facilitator and coach”. What a wonderful afternoon :-)

Meeting with a woman business owner one on one builds a relationship!

Lori Molnar is an interesting person and I got to know her even better when I interviewed her. Susan Ward who designed my website and comes regularly to my network brought Lori once and she’s come every time since (except for the times she and John go way on vacation). That’s dedication!

You know that when you host a party you don’t get to speak to each guest at length – well that’s my network. So I decided I’d really like to know Lori better.

We met at a local coffee shop (that’s the noise that you hear). I already knew that she is an interior designer, gerontologist and an artist but I got to learn lots more about her.

She had worked for years at the teachers’ union here in Toronto, took a sabbatical at age 40, during which she was renovating her house. She was in a paint store buying paint for this when she overheard a couple talking about their home to the sales clerk. She spoke up and gave them her ideas. They bought her lunch to chat more and became her first clients. And the rest as they say is history.

Networking and building relationships pays off again!

Laurie HustonDoing an interview gave me a good reason to get together with Laurie over tea. We’ve known each other for more than 10 years and back in 2003 and 2004 we often ran into each other in the Beach in Toronto. My brother and I even took a Tai Chi class she offered back in 2003.

Laurie is always smiling and her laugh is contagious so getting together with her is always a positive and happy experience. I always smile when I think of her.

Over the years she’s done many things which all have something to do with her love of helping people. Listen to this recording to hear more about her background and experiences, who’s influenced her, what being self employed means to her and what marketing she uses now.

Donna MesserDonna Messer died on her birthday in April 2015. She is sorely missed by all of us who knew her and the many more who were exposed to her.

This phone interview was one I did with her on July 2nd of 2014. I had a wonderful conversation and interview with Donna Messer of Connectus Canada. then. Neither Donna nor I could remember when and where we met but as she said our paths have crossed often at events over the last 20+ years. It was great to reconnect and get to talk even it was by phone. It was as if no time had passed! You’ve probably found the same thing with friends and colleagues – you just pick up where you left off.

Whenever you hear the word networking (at least here in the Toronto area) even now one thinks of Donna Messer. As the subject line of this post says, she was a networker extraordinaire. I feel fortunate to have known her for so long.

Networking and building relationships pays off!

Donna was an author, speaker, coach and mentor, and an inspiring and passionate motivator. She even made the time to volunteer with several groups. She would give the names of people she knew (which were many) to everyone she met (and she met a lot of people in her speaking on three continents). As you’ll hear in this recording she offered to help me with my new venture when I’m ready – a truly generous person.

I can’t say enough about her but you’ll hear a lot more detail about her and her experiences and beliefs in our interview recording so listen to it.

Anne SowdenI had a wonderful conversation and interview with Anne Sowden of Here’s Looking At You. Anne and I have chatted with each other for three years in July at the annual CAWEE (Canadian Women Entrepreneurs and Executives) Lunch ‘n Learn tea at the elegant King Edward Hotel. I sent her an email this year after it, and asked why we only meet there and said I’d love to meet her for coffee to get to know her better. Hear her answer  in the recording.

Networking pays off again!

I hadn’t realized she’d had jobs in marketing and communication like several of the women I’ve interviewed.  When she was laid off she took some training and became a business owner herself as an image consultant. You’ll hear a lot more detail about her and her experiences and beliefs in our interview recording.

We met at a coffee shop nearby and the noise you hear is other patrons talking to each other. Red Rocket Coffee is a friendly, individually owned local business that serves and sells free trade coffee and is where I like to meet people.

Margaret PenderMargaret Pender of Doggone Right  and I met in the 1980s when we were both members of the Elmwood Club for Women here in Toronto (It’s now the Elmwood Spa). We were on committees together and got to know each other quite well. She was a real estate agent then. Years passed and we met again at the Beaches chapter of the now defunct Women in a Home Office networking group at the Ashbridges’ Bay Yacht Club. I was surprised to learn about her current business as a dog obedience trainer – I never knew :-) (There’s networking again!)

We of course had a lot to tell each other but as old associates do, we connected quickly and easily.

She’s always been an animal lover and owner. She told me that her home when she was growing up was like a menagerie. She searched for her passion and took what had been just a hobby, made it a business and became a business owner again. You’ll hear a lot more detail in our interview recording.

Deanne KelleherI had a wonderful conversation and interview with Deanne Kelleher of KAOS Group. Deanne and I met over 10 years ago (we built our relationship!) when she ran the Beaches chapter of the now defunct Women in a Home Office networking group which met at the Ashbridges’ Bay Yacht Club. The scenery there is beautiful and looking out over the waters of Lake Ontario is so peaceful. But I digress :-)

She is everywhere – at a CAWEE (Canadian Women Entrepreneurs and Executives) networking and learning meeting (she runs their lunch ‘n learn events), running her own business, teaching at a community college AND Deanne is a wonderful connector!. She introduces people who need something to someone who has it.

A couple of years ago, after my stroke I needed help with my books and files and she organized them so  I could get at them easily when I needed to. That was time and money well spent.

She’s always been an organizer. It’s in her genes. So she started her own organizing business and became a business owner. You’ll hear a lot more detail in our interview recording.

Anne Carbert Women EntrepreneursI was chatting with Deanne Kelleher of KAOS Group and mentioned that I was doing interviews. She told me that she had been interviewed by Anne Carbert. I looked at Anne’s website, liked her interviews and wanted to know what software she used. Deanne then introduced Anne and I at a CAWEE (Canadian Women Entrepreneurs and Executives) meeting (Deanne is a wonderful connector!).

I phoned Anne after the meeting and we talked about the “techy” stuff that she was using. She explained what she was doing with the interviews (she and I both happen to be Mac users!) and I asked her to be interviewed by me.

Long story short, she said yes, I interviewed her and here it is. Isn’t networking wonderful :-)

The short version of her background is that she started out to become a lawyer. She believed in human rights and thought that law was the right place to get them for people. She practiced for a few years and got to work on several international projects.  However, she wanted a work-life balance so started to look for a new career. She eventually became a career counsellor and a business owner. You’ll hear a lot more detail in our interview recording.

I found a blog post from Profit magazine online that is about work-life balance and why entrepreneurs have it. This is the link to Entrepreneurs are Rocking Work/Life Balance

Anne and I had a wonderful meeting and our one on one allowed me to get to know her better.

We did the interview at Red Rocket Coffee on the Danforth in Toronto so you’ll hear conversations and cups clinking in the background.

Jody and I met several years ago while networking at the now defunct SOHO International run by Louisa Nedkov which met at a restaurant on Bayview Ave in Toronto.

Louisa held a Christmas event where you could rent a tabletop and display your wares. The Bargains Group which Jody runs had a table and being a shopper I bought several Christmas gifts there. Jody and I talked and got to know each other (as a good networker does). So when I emailed her about interviewing her she remembered me :-)

I’ve seen her on TV often over the years with her many charities (all of which are listed on the Bargains Group website) all of which started here in Toronto and now have gone across Canada. She she has shown that practicing corporate social responsibility is possible for even the smallest of companies.

Jody has won both humanitarian and entrepreneurial awards and most recently is listed in Profit magazine the 14th annual PROFIT W100 ranking of Canada’s Top Female Entrepreneurs.
