Control Your Computer. Don’t Let It Get To You.

Do you feel trapped by technology? Whenever there is a problem on your computer do you think it’s you that caused it and your lack of knowledge?

As boomers you didn’t grow up with technology and computers and the internet the way young people did. Young people have cellphones, ipods, laptops, tablet computers AND know how to use them every day.

I was one of the first elementary school teachers to take a computer into my classroom. Being 1978, it was an 8K Commodore PET with a built-in tape recorder. I taught Special Education. I had NEVER studied or used computers. I have an Arts BA!

I persevered. After all in 1978 I was only 28 and I didn’t know I couldn’t do it. Back then the only way to change software programs (and my students were non-readers) was by programming. So I learned a little – just enough to make the modifications I needed and enough to decide that I would NOT become a programmer.

I left the school system to co-own one of the first Apple computer dealerships in Toronto from 1980 to 1989. Even though I’ve always had something to do with computers (see my About Me page), I’ve always been a “user” of technology. I taught our clients in the dealership who were often coming from using typewriters to computers and have taught many others since then how to use computers.
